sweep tonight and another world series title. hundreds are watching game four right now at the civic center in san francisco. and while detroit is on the verge of elimination a return to the world series has proven to be emblematic of the perseverance of the motor city. mike sugerman shows us what the fall classic meanst tot city and its people and -- to the city and its people and has the mood changed too? >> reporter: well, nothing like a home team home run and the first lead of the entire series for detroit. to get fans excited and yes, i heard some loud yelling from the stadium which i hasn't heard in the last -- hadn't heard in the last couple can of days, the region -- couple of days. the region really needs a boost. the following is a tale of two cities. and of how both are trying to ride on a tigers' tale. first, some good news.

some detroit real estate is up over 100% this year. >> between 25 and 30. thousand. >> reporter: a similar home like david larson's fixer upper would have cost $10,000 at the beginning of the year. >> this is just detroit. this is all we've ever known. >> detroit has lost the equivalent of one and a half san franciscos. >> reporter: native bill mcgraw who runs the website deadlinedetroit gave us a tour of his city that in fact has lost two-thirds of its population. >> that's really why there's all this vacant lots and empty buildings. >> reporter: there are entire neighborhoods of that. >> it's by far the most troubled big city from every point of view. >> reporter: unemployment, poverty, education, it's estimated one-half of all detroiters are out of work. but don't take away from this story that all is bleak in detroit. there are neighborhoods of beautiful homes, 6,000 square feet, half million dollar homes

and million dollar houses in the suburbs. the difference between the haves and the have-nots in detroit is striking. general motors is humming again. artists have taken over bleak neighborhoods and turned them into galleries. young people are incoming to trendy -- flocking to trendy bars and sports pub. >> s. >> there's a lot to be hopeful for. >> i'm not optimistic,. >> reporter: says bill mcgraw who has two. it has given sports crazy detroit something to unite behind and boost its civic pride. something that's sorely needed. they certainly could use a lift and well, they've got one right now. and they're ahead and they're hoping for four more wins. >> all right. mike sugerman in detroit. thank you. now the friendlier confines of the civic center. cbs 5 reporter elizabeth cook is with hundreds maybe thousands of fans. >> reporter: definitely a sea

of orange and black here at civic center as thousands you said it right, fans pack in to watch their favorite team on the big screen. take a look at city hall. it's illuminated in orange. [ cheering and applause ] getting very excited here, we're in a commercial and they're getting -- amped up. we spoke to a couple of really loyal fans who got here late last night to make sure they had the perfect seat. >> exciting, torture. i've been biting off my nails so i don't have no more nails. >> you think it would be like really cold and boring but we were excited the whole time. we got maybe half an hour of sleep and we've been running on rock stars and energy drinks and it's fun though. it's part of the excitement. >> reporter: now we caught one the mayor -- up with mayor ed lee this evening and he just got permission from major league baseball last night that he could show the game here on the big screen. i asked a couple of fans if they secretly wished that maybe the last game the giants play

if they win was here in their hometown. they said no. absolutely not. a win is sweet whether or not it's away or it's here and by the way watching this on the big screen makes them feel like they're at home. elizabeth cook, cbs 5 early edition. >> including championship and world series gear that you can buy. head to the website, cbssf.com/giants. well, tonight more than 60 million people along the eastern seaboard are bracing for an unwelcome guest. hurricane sandy is scurrying the coast and preparing for a destruct i left turn to the country's most populated cities. cbs reporter duarte geraldino is live in maryland with the storm's track. >> reporter: everything is changing so quickly. at this point the wind has picked up behind me and you can see a tree which hints at how strong some of the wind is. they've cleared a lot of the things that would fly and hurt

someones but the trees can really let you know how bad it is. despite the uptick in the wind there are some people who are refusing to leave their homes in low lying areas. rough surf is pounding the east coast. from virginia to massachusetts as sandy marches north. >> we are all buttoned -- bat end down and battery. >> reporter: forecasters say some 60 million people are in the path of the monster storm. >> i don't think people are as prepared for the storm as they should be. >> reporter: high winds, torrential rains and snow to an 800-mile area. it's already causing flooding in virginia. because of the threat of a deadly storm surge, officials have ordered tens of thousands of people in low lying areas along the coast to evacuate. >> don't be stupid, get out. and go to higher safer ground. you know, i just don't know any other way to put it i guess. >> reporter: sandy is taking aim at major cities. new york city shut down the

major transit systems and in lower manhattan people are backing bags and leaving town. >> we refuse to evacuate. not only putting yourself at risk but also the first responders who will have to assist you in an emergency. >> reporter: sandy isn't expected to make landfall until late monday early tuesday. but conditions along the delaware coast are already deteriorating. some people are using the final hours before sandy strikes to protect their property. >> hoping for the best. >> safe and you know just making sure our store doesn't get damaged. >> reporter: utility crews are already getting in place. the storm is expected to cause massive power outages and could linger for days. and there are already confirmed cases of roads that have been flooded and therefore shut down which makes it all that much more difficult for people who have chosen to stay behind in low lying areas. >> you're out in the middle of it. do you get a sense of whether or not the storm is changing yet? >> reporter: yeah. you know, again, the storm is

still 24 hours out but behind me you get a look at the waves, this late at night you shouldn't be able to see the white caps. there are some waves that are cresting at two and three stories high. you see the white caps in the distance? that should not be visible. the waters is receding about 200 yards and then coming in with greater force. kim? >> duarte geraldino, thank you so much. and tourists will feel the effects of the storm as well as residents for only the fourth time in history. atlantic city closed all 12 of its casinos st. statue of liberty due to reopen tomorrow after its $30 million makeover will remain off-limits to visitors for another few days. then tonight times square is still crowded even the subway system being shut down. tonight travelers have stranded by sandy and 6,000 flights have been canceled nationwide. more than 50 right here in the bay area. cbs 5 reporter anne makovec on

the battle already to rebook. >> reporter: we found out last night our flight to new jersey was canceled. >> i'm trying to get to greensboro, north carolina. >> reporter: dozens of flights from the west coast to the east have been scrapped and the rescheduling process is slow. >> so i set up my phone. and put it on speakerphone and tried to get an agent and it sat there for two hours and 42 minutes. >> we're here to see what we can do to make arrangements. >> reporter: in addition to the dozens of cancellations today many more are expected tomorrow and tuesday when the storm really hits so passengers here don't know what to expect. >> i don't know how long we going to wait. >> reporter: this group is at the end of a tour for young political leaders from all over the world. they have a presentation in dc tomorrow. >> we're just trying the figure this out. we're going to go to chicago and then by chicago to north carolina and then to get by car to washington, d.c.. >> reporter: in the meantime, flights full of people who just escaped to the storm were arriving. >> we slid right underneat it.

[ laughter ] >> reporter: at sfo, anne makovec, cbs 5. >> and other bay area airports two flights from oakland have been canceled tonight. more expected tomorrow and jet blue has canceled their red eye flights from san jose to new york and boston tonight and tomorrow night. a cyclist hit by a police car on the streets of san francisco. what the officer says happened. >> back to earth, what the new workhorse of the space fleet brings home in its cargo bay. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

police cruiser. a san francisco cyclist is expected to be okay after being hit by a police cruiser. this happened around 3:30 this afternoon near justin herman plaza. the cyclist was in the bike lane when the officer hit him. the fire department tells us the officer didn't see the

cyclist. he was up and walking after the accident. checking area headlines, four overnight shootings in san jose in one a man died. the victim was shot it's before 3:00 a.m. near locust and humboldt streets. he became the city's 39th homicide. his death means san jose has now equaled the homicide rate for all of last year. 12 people are out of their homes tonight after a stubborn four alarm fire in san jose. firefighters got the call around 7:30 this morning about a garage fire at a condo complex in the 3100 lock of creekside drive. six garages and five units were damaged. no word on a cause but investigators say the fire started in one of the garages. and tomorrow, 33 new recruits with the san jose fire department will begin their training. that's the largest class ever. a grant from fema is responsible for the new hires. and soon the department will have about 680 firefighters

near its prelayoff i level. the dragon landed. the unmanned space x space capsule was safely guided into the pacific ocean off baja after a two week trip to the space station and it brought back nearly a ton of science experiments and equipment. the dragon is the only delivery ship capable of returning cargo now that the shuttle program has ended. big time weather pattern change right here in the bayer and now we're taking about the -- bay area and now we're talking about rain back into the forecast. the rain when you can expect it as eyewitness news continues right here on cbs 5. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

14 degrees above normal. we banged anywhere if 66 in half-moon bay to 83 degrees in livermore and also to the south in gilroy outside is our live cbs 5 weather camera. see that right there? to you see it? the -- do you see it? the low clouds, the patchy fog, that's what's signaling a weather pattern change right here in the bay area. we hit 76 today in stance. now knocked back -- san francisco. now knocked back down to 76 degrees due to the marine layer that's now flipping underneath the golden gate bridge. currently 68 in san jose after realizing a high today of 76. tonight everybody tumbles into the 50s with mostly cloudy skies and areas of patchy dense fog especially near the coasts and into our inland areas. so tonight, we do become cloudy. tomorrow, a great start and then sunshine away from the beaches and no trick, we to have rain in the -- do have rain in the halloween forecast. this right here is an area of low pressure that's slowly beginning to break down the ridge of high pressure that's

been provoiding us with the offshore flow. wind blow out to the beaches and everyone has seamless sunshine. but now we have the return of the on shore push, the winds are now rotating to the west and we'll blow overnight 10 to 15 miles an hour and that's why we have the development of the clouds. notice it seeps into the bay in the overnight hours there's the morning commute. so dense i should say that we will see some condensation in the form overdriesings. but that may be a little bit ambitious. i would anticipate overcast conditions for the most part and that will bring the temperatures down at the beaches. a string of 60s will be noted. 60s to low 70s from south san francisco into bailment and mill bay. 73 in san jose but still approaching 83-degrees the further south you go to morgan hill and gilroy. low 80s in brentwood and 74 to the north in napa. central bay 60s and low 70s and

this year. quinn's replacement matt cassel picked off by matt lee. the raiders forced four turnovers and win their second straight game 26-16 is the final. >> we executed better. you know, and -- that's part of the way that it is in the national football league. i mean you don't play you know, the same every week. the key is, can you overcome when you don't play well and still win football games? that's what we were able to do last week. i think this week we came out and i think we executed well from the very beginning of the game. >> we've come into the very difficult environment. it's a rough crowd to play in front of. they're great, they're great fans they're almost as good as ours. but they're great fans. and they make it difficult on us and we've done a really good job. the two times i've been here blocking out those distractions. a lot of times you come in leer and there's some awkward weather situations. we've done a good job fighting the distractions and finding ways to get a win and come in here. the rangers were hoping for
